Short-course off-road driver in an SA full-face helmet and NecksGen-style neck restraint at Glen Helen dirt track

Championship Off-Road’s only West Coast round is two weeks out. Glen Helen Raceway, San Bernardino, October 2–3. Spectator camping is Thursday, October 1 through Sunday, October 4. The series moved it off September 25–26. Official event page: champoffroad.com/events/glen-helen-off-road-national.

This is short-course. Pro 4 and Pro 2 trucks, Pro Lite, Pro Spec, Pro Buggy, Pro SxS, and the youth / sportsman ladder. Not a SCORE Trophy Truck looping Baja. The kit that fails tech is a DOT trail helmet and no neck. The kit that gets through is a Snell SA full-face, an SFI 38.1 head-and-neck, belts, a suit that matches your class book, and a bottle you can actually grab.

What tech is looking at

Championship Off-Road’s published 2024 rulebook (Ver. 9) is still the public document. It wants a full-face helmet with a Lexan shield and a legible Snell SA or FIA sticker, and an SFI 38.1 head-and-neck restraint in every class anytime the car is on track. The 2024 list names SA2015 / SA2020 and several FIA specs. The dealer shelf right now is SA2025 race helmets. Confirm the sticker with Glen Helen tech. Do not invent a bulletin. Do not show up with a Klim or HJC DOT lid and argue about it at the trailer.

Helmet: Snell SA, not DOT

If you race Pro 4, Pro 2, Lite, Spec, Buggy, or Pro SxS, the lid has to be a race helmet. PCI’s own Klim R1 copy is blunt: DOT / ECE, recreational, not approved for racing. Same story for the HJC i10 and GMax open-face. Those stay on the trail truck.

Dirt visor, HANS posts, RaceAir already in the shell: the PCI Stilo Venti WRX Dirt SA2025 is Snell SA2025 and FIA 8859-2015, HANS installed, carbon PURO shell, Stilo earcup wiring, PCI carbon RaceAir fitting preinstalled. About 3.25 lb wired. Maglock and helmet skirt sold separate. Same helmet without the air fitting: Stilo Venti WRX Dirt SA2025, no air, about 3 lb.

If the budget is a race helmet, not a Stilo: the PCI Wired Pyrotect Pro Race Carbon MidAir SA2025 is Snell SA2025, carbon composite, PCI-wired speakers and mic, Mid Forced Air ready for RaceAir, 6 mm HNR back plate, about 3.80 lb. PCI will install head-and-neck hardware free if you buy the helmet and the restraint together and put it in the notes.

Youth 170 / 200 SxS: the PCI Zamp RZ-42Y is Snell CMR2016, which is the youth standard COR’s book actually names. Smaller Kevlar-mix shell, fire-retardant interior, PCI Elite wiring optional. It is not pre-drilled for HNR hardware. Call before you drill it yourself. Custom-drilled youth lids are final sale.

Dust: add a helmet skirt. Glen Helen silt still finds a visor seal.

Neck: SFI 38.1, every class

COR’s book is not optional on this. R3, HANS, Hybrid, or another SFI 38.1 device, manufactured within five years, used the way the maker wrote it. The yokeless unit on this shelf that states SFI 38.1 on the page is the NecksGen REV — carbon composite, quick-release helmet hardware included, full range of motion, made in the USA. Newer carbon: the NecksGen REV X Carbon, 1.8 lb with harness and buckle, X-strap, 3-inch belt guides that take 2- or 3-inch shoulders. Buy the helmet and the restraint together if you want the posts installed before you leave.

Belts, suit, fire

A neck device without belts is jewelry. The Impact 16.5 PRO Series Latch & Link 5-point is SFI 16.5, 2-inch, bolt-in, QSR shoulder adjusters for driver changes. Match width to the NecksGen guides. Confirm your class book for 2-inch vs 3-inch.

Suit: match COR’s class sheet, not a T-shirt. On the shelf, the race suit that states a real rating is the PCI 2 Layer Driving Suit SFI 3.2A/5 — dual-layer Nomex, TPP 25.6. Do not assume a 1-layer 3.2A/1 is enough for Pro 4. Read the class.

Bottle: Amerex ABC dry chemical, 2.5 lb or 5 lb, 9–15 ft range, about 10 seconds of discharge. Put it on the aluminum quick-release mount with stainless hose clamps — sized for the 2.5 lb bottle — not zip-tied to a tube you cannot reach with a glove on. Pit box: the PCI First Aid Kit is the race bag on the shelf. Tourniquet is sold separate; add one if your team does not already carry it.

Air still matters on a short course

Glen Helen in October is not Ensenada in September, but visors still fog and Pro 4 still cooks a driver. The RaceAir Pro is the race blower: dual independent fans, one or two helmets, about 2 lb with the bracket, low amp draw, roll-bar or panel mount. Hoses sold separate. Pair it with a MidAir or RaceAir-fitted lid, not a mouth hose on a DOT helmet. Spec Pro vs Boost vs Lite in the Academy piece if you need the decision tree. This Bulletin is the tech bag, not the blower catalog.

Do this before you roll into tech

  • Read COR’s current book and any 2026 bulletin. The 2024 PDF is public; Glen Helen tech is the last word on the sticker.
  • Show an SA (or FIA) full-face, not DOT. Youth: CMR2016, not dad’s extra HJC.
  • Clip an SFI 38.1 neck. Date it. Hardware in the helmet, not in a bag in the trailer.
  • Belts that match the neck guides. Suit that matches the class, not the merch table.
  • Extinguisher on a quick-release, first-aid bag in the pit, visor skirt on the lid.
  • If the visor fogs in practice, fix air now. Do not discover it on the parade lap.

Lineups and class counts are not posted yet. We will not invent an entry list. We will tell you the safety kit that belongs in a short-course truck, not a peninsula chase stack.
